Hassle-Free Spring Cleaning

Spring has well and truly made itself known. We can start to enjoy our gardens coming to life, the flourishing cherry blossoms and the warmer days tempting us to take a dip at our favourite swim spot.

Spring also serves as the perfect time to fling open your bedroom doors, cupboards and wardrobes and declutter and clean the house thoroughly. Go through all the boxes of odd and ends to be sorted, file all the piles of mixed paperwork, finally dust the often strategically ignored shelves and furniture items around the house and remove all the dust and pet hair hiding in carpet and corners of rooms.

To make your job even easier here’s the low down on Dyson’s best products to help with a spring clean.

GOOD-BYE CORDS

walmount

Anyone who has ever vacuumed a house can tell you how inconvenient corded vacuums can be. The sheer limitations caused by the cord length, the need to continually unplug it and plug it back in from room to room. And then there’s the delicate dance you need to engage in as you swerve from side to side to avoid running over the cord as you tango your way around the vacuum cleaner. Dyson allows you to say goodbye to cord hassles and just get on with the job of spring cleaning. Being cordless makes them super portable as well. Some, like the Dyson V7 Cordfree vacuum can even be wall mounted with their charging unit for easy storage. There are a range of heads and accessories that can be used for cleaning carpet, hard floors and hard to reach nooks and crannies. It’s worth noting that being cordless, stick vacuum cleaners do have a limited run time, so make sure they are fully charged before big cleaning jobs and always return them to the charging unit after use.

DUST AWAY ALLERGIES

dyson-soft-brush-hero1

Giving your house a really good vacuum can help control irritants that contribute to allergies and the nasty hay fever that comes along with spring.

Dust build up can cause a lot of allergy issues for those sensitive to it. The Dyson Soft Dusting Brush attachment is perfectly designed to lightly dust surfaces and makes quick work of hard to clean areas like window blinds. The soft dusting brush gently removes dust and allergens from flat surfaces, delicate areas and upholstery.

You can also try using the Dyson V11 Absolute Cordless vacuum to effectively clean carpeted areas where dust builds up more easily, while also transitioning seamlessly to harder surfaces like wood and tiles. If allergens are a real issue for you, try to vacuum once or twice a week to minimise dust, pollen, skin cells and dust mite droppings.

CATS, CARS AND KIDS

dog and baby

While the bulk of the spring cleaning will involve decluttering, dusting, scrubbing and vacuuming, there are areas of your life that will need cleaning more regularly. Apart from the seemingly endless mess children like to leave behind after every meal or craft session, many cats and dogs will start to shed their winter coats at this time of year. That means a build-up of loose hair balls rolling down the halls mixed with cereal crumbs and left-over glitter.

car clean

A portable handheld vacuum cleaner like the Dyson V7 Trigger Handheld is ideal for quick clean ups like these and you can even choose cordless vacuum cleaners designed specifically for pet hair . Handheld vacuums make cleaning easier and more convenient than ever and are also great for hard to reach places like in the car, where corded vacuums are just too big a hassle to use.

INSPIRE SOMEONES BUCKET LIST:

Supermarket windows are fast being graced with baubles and tinsel and carols will soon ring out through shopping centres around the nation – Christmas is here.

While this time of year marks a great time of festivities with friends and family, it also offers a chance to show them just how much they mean to us through the art of gift giving. However, we all have that one person who is difficult to buy for because they seem to have everything they need. Instead of taking the easy way out and giving them cash, why not get creative and consider gifting something that will inspire them to cross something off their bucket list.

Most of us will have a bucket list of things we want to do over our life time. They could range from learning an instrument to travelling to Scandinavia to see the northern lights. Either way helping a loved one tick off an item on their bucket list would be the ultimate gift.

THE ULTIMATE TRAVEL DESTINATION GIFT

Travel

Whether it’s hot air ballooning over French wineries, snorkeling with whales, or backpacking around Europe, everyone has a travel destination on their bucket list. One thing they all have in common is the need to capture the amazing experience in photos. While everyone has a basic camera built in to their smartphones, you can’t go past a dedicated digital camera to capture stunning photos while on an adventure. You have a lot to choose from, be it a compact digital camera to a more feature heavy digital SLR. To browse the full range of digital cameras click HERE.

THE VOICE ACTIVATED SMART HOME GIFT

Hue

Smart homes are no longer a thing of science-fiction – the homes of the future are available now. Smart lighting is the first step into adapting a home with user friendly technology. Imagine being able to program your home lights from the touch of a button or even a voice command. The benefits range from being able to make sure all the lights are turned off at home from the comfort of your desk at work, or being able to switch on the porch lights while in your car in the driveway, to even programming your lights to turn off or on at certain times – great for the early risers in the family. Once you have them in a home you won’t want to do without them again. Consider the Philips Hue lighting system as a great foray into smart homes. For more smart home ideas click HERE.

THE INSPIRING CHEF GIFT

Chef

When you consider the amount of cookbooks available in stores it would be safe to assume Australians love to cook. While this may be the case, many recipes call for items we just don’t own. Why not gift something that will help inspire someone to become the next Nigella Lawson. They can make their own mince and pasta from scratch, so they know exactly what goes into their next tantalising dish of spaghetti bolognaise. Or what about helping with the new year health kick so they can make their own healthy and organic dehydrated food and snacks? Then there’s the bench-worthy KitchenAid mixer – the ultimate chef must-have. For more budding chef inspirations click HERE.

THE FAMILY ORIENTATED GIFT

Family

We take a lot of photos in our modern digital world. But how often are we getting those memories printed out into tangible photos? When pictures stay on our devices they get lost and we often forget to go back and look at them. Having them printed off in photo form in frames on walls, tables and albums means we can relive those wonderful memories regularly. The quickest and convenient way to do this is with a personal photo printer at home. These also make great devices at a party, where photos taken that minute can then be printed off and shared with guests at the press of a button.

THE HOW TO RUN A MARATHON GIFT

Fitbit

Getting fit and healthy is often the basic new years’ resolution, but translate it to a bucket list and it might come in the form of a wish to run a marathon. The only way to get there is to start training. Fuel this inspiration in the form of a wearable fitness device. Wearable tech will keep track of your daily steps, count calories, monitor heart-rate, and record sleep routines, all while also being a stylish watch at the same time. For the best wearable equipment click HERE.

THE ENTREPRENEUR GIFT

Entrepreneur

And finally, how many of us want to get out of the rat-race and work for themselves? If you have a loved one planning on running their own business or who has just started one up, the best gift you can give them is technology. The gift of a tablet, 2-in-1, or a laptop is the ultimate first step for the budding entrepreneur. Utilising the flexibility of a portable computer or tablet is essential for any modern business. Winter entertaining with one game-changing kitchen item

If you are new to the idea of steam ovens in the home be prepared to discover the amazing array of culinary possibilities they offer up.

Sitting around and connecting with friends and family over a hearty winter meal is one of the true pleasures in life that can’t be bought. When you combine this natural Australian pastime with appliances that make the process easier you have a winning combination.

Steam ovens have become the next big game-changing kitchen item in the home since the microwave oven. Steam ovens and steam combination ovens have been around since the 1970’s, however they were almost entirely used for industrial cooking and catering. The efficiency of cooking and the ability to replace several kitchen items at once meant they quickly became popular in restaurant kitchens around the world. However, they generally eluded our home kitchens until more recent times.

Today the steam combination oven is something every home should have – making life easier and freeing-up time and space. Let’s take a look at the top 4 reasons you should consider a Miele steam/steam combination oven in your kitchen, and just how you can use it to entertain with family and friends.

DGC-6660-XXL-20000104038.jpg

Cook Multiple Meals at Once

Miele steam ovens and steam combination ovens offer the ability to cook a whole three course meal in one sitting. The beauty of the popular steam combination oven is that it can do everything your old oven did, but with the added bonus of being able to steam side-dishes, soups or desserts while the main is cooking. Miele steam combination ovens come with additional oven functions such as Conventional heat, Top or Bottom heat, Full or Economy grill, Fan grill or Intensive bake.

The steam combination ovens also come with a wireless food probe which can be used to monitor the core temperature constantly. The oven can calculate the cooking duration automatically and will stop the cooking process when the set core temperature is reached. That means more time relaxing with your guests.

Won’t Dry Out Foods

Humidity in our ovens play a huge role in how our food cooks and ultimately tastes. Food scientist and author of Modernist Cooking, Nathan Myhrvold, says “We cook our food using technology invented to bake bricks.”. Hence these traditional ovens have no control over humidity.

The steam ovens allow an immediate exchange of heat to provide quicker cooking without the need to pre-heat, while also preventing flavours, vitamins and nutrients from evaporating out of the food.

The moisture setting in the ovens also allow food to be revived the day after – this includes leftovers and baked breads.

Replaces Other Kitchen Appliances

A steam combination oven replaces bulkier stand-alone steamers, steam ovens, dehydrators, and slow cookers. Essentially freeing up room on the kitchen bench top when cooking, and removing the need to stash away extra appliances and utensils when not in use.

Saves Cleaning Time

How often have you finished a meal only to be met with the unattractive reality of a kitchen full of dirty appliances that need soaking and scrubbing? The Miele steam combination oven saves time by removing the need to clean multiple kitchen appliances after one cooking session.

Unlike other systems, the steam is generated outside the oven interior in Miele steam ovens. This offers considerable advantages for the cooking process but also means lime scale cannot build up in the oven, making for quick and easy cleaning.

Lastly, to make your life easier the inner cabinet of the steam combination oven is made from stainless steel with a special linen-weave structure and PerfectClean finish, making it easier to clean and less sensitive to scratching than other ovens.

STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING WITH PEAR AND TONKA BEAN CARAMEL By Shannon Bennett for Miele

sticky_date

INGREDIENTS
Sugar Syrup

220g caster sugar
500ml water

Dehydrated Pear

1 William or Packham pear

Puddings

200g pitted dates, halved
250ml water
½ tsp bi-carb soda
60g butter, room temperature
160g brown sugar
2 eggs
200g self raising flour
1 William or Packham pear, peeled

Tonka Bean Caramel Sauce

300ml cream
200g brown sugar
250g butter
1 tonka beans, roughly chopped

METHOD
Sugar Syrup
  1. Place sugar and water in a saucepan on medium heat, Induction setting 6-7.
  2. Bring to the boil slowly, stirring to dissolve the sugar.
  3. Boil for 2 minutes, remove from the heat and set aside to cool.
Dehydrated Pear

1. Slice the unpeeled pear very thinly using a mandolin, approximately 2mm thick.
2. Wrap cling wrap over a Baking tray twice, this will allow air to flow beneath the pears for a crisper result. Dip each pear slice into the sugar syrup and lay flat onto the plastic wrap, leaving a small space between each slice.
3. Place the Baking tray on a rack in a Gourmet Warming Drawer on Food Setting 5 (approximately 85°C) or in an Oven on Drying
function at 90°C. Set timer for 6 hours. Check the pears for crispness, if firm, they are ready, otherwise continue to dry for another hour.
4. Leave pear slices in the Oven until completely cool to touch. Store in an airtight container.

Puddings

1. Grease and line the bases of a 12 cup muffin tin, or a 2 litre capacity rectangular baking dish. Pre-heat Oven at 160°C with 1 manual burst of steam.
2. Place the dates and water into a saucepan on medium heat, Induction setting 6-7 and bring to the boil. Remove from heat and add bi-carb soda, stirring well to combine. Set aside to cool at room temperature.
3. Cut the pear in half lengthways and remove the core with a melon baller. Place the pear in a Perforated steam tray and Steam
at 100°C for 4 minutes. The pear should be cooked but have a little resistance to it’s flesh. Set aside in the Refrigerator to cool completely and dice.
4. Cream the butter and sugar together in a large bowl of an electric mixer until thick and creamy.
5. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing thoroughly between each addition.
6. Add flour and combine.
7. Whisk the date mixture into a smooth paste and add to the mixture.
8. Add the diced pear and gently fold through.
9. Spoon mixture evenly into the preferred tins/dish and place into Oven on shelf position 2 and release the burst of steam immediately.
Bake for 20-25 minutes for individual serves or 50-55 minutes for a large pudding until firm to touch and deep golden brown.

Tonka Bean Caramel Sauce

1. Place all the ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat, Induction setting 5-6 until melted, whisk well to combine. Reduce heat to low, Induction setting 4 and continue to cook for a further 15-20 minutes.
2. Cool the sauce for 5 minutes before straining caramel through a sieve over a heat-proof bowl. Discard the tonka bean.
3. Pierce the tops of the warm puddings with a skewer and spoon over a tablespoon of the caramel sauce. Return the puddings to the Oven and continue to Bake for a further 5 minutes.
4. Serve with extra caramel sauce, clotted cream and or ice cream.

HINTS & TIPS
  • If pears are very hard, they may need a few extra minutes of steaming.
  • Tonka beans have a bitter almond flavour and are a great alternative to vanilla or cinnamon. They can be purchased from specialty delicatessens and gourmet food stores.
