Winter entertaining with one game-changing kitchen item

If you are new to the idea of steam ovens in the home be prepared to discover the amazing array of culinary possibilities they offer up.

Sitting around and connecting with friends and family over a hearty winter meal is one of the true pleasures in life that can’t be bought. When you combine this natural Australian pastime with appliances that make the process easier you have a winning combination.

Steam ovens have become the next big game-changing kitchen item in the home since the microwave oven. Steam ovens and steam combination ovens have been around since the 1970’s, however they were almost entirely used for industrial cooking and catering. The efficiency of cooking and the ability to replace several kitchen items at once meant they quickly became popular in restaurant kitchens around the world. However, they generally eluded our home kitchens until more recent times.

Today the steam combination oven is something every home should have – making life easier and freeing-up time and space. Let’s take a look at the top 4 reasons you should consider a Miele steam/steam combination oven in your kitchen, and just how you can use it to entertain with family and friends.

Cook Multiple Meals at Once

Miele steam ovens and steam combination ovens offer the ability to cook a whole three course meal in one sitting. The beauty of the popular steam combination oven is that it can do everything your old oven did, but with the added bonus of being able to steam side-dishes, soups or desserts while the main is cooking. Miele steam combination ovens come with additional oven functions such as Conventional heat, Top or Bottom heat, Full or Economy grill, Fan grill or Intensive bake.

The steam combination ovens also come with a wireless food probe which can be used to monitor the core temperature constantly. The oven can calculate the cooking duration automatically and will stop the cooking process when the set core temperature is reached. That means more time relaxing with your guests.

Won’t Dry Out Foods

Humidity in our ovens play a huge role in how our food cooks and ultimately tastes. Food scientist and author of Modernist Cooking, Nathan Myhrvold, says “We cook our food using technology invented to bake bricks.”. Hence these traditional ovens have no control over humidity.

The steam ovens allow an immediate exchange of heat to provide quicker cooking without the need to pre-heat, while also preventing flavours, vitamins and nutrients from evaporating out of the food.

The moisture setting in the ovens also allow food to be revived the day after – this includes leftovers and baked breads.

Replaces Other Kitchen Appliances

A steam combination oven replaces bulkier stand-alone steamers, steam ovens, dehydrators, and slow cookers. Essentially freeing up room on the kitchen bench top when cooking, and removing the need to stash away extra appliances and utensils when not in use.

Saves Cleaning Time

How often have you finished a meal only to be met with the unattractive reality of a kitchen full of dirty appliances that need soaking and scrubbing? The Miele steam combination oven saves time by removing the need to clean multiple kitchen appliances after one cooking session.

Unlike other systems, the steam is generated outside the oven interior in Miele steam ovens. This offers considerable advantages for the cooking process but also means lime scale cannot build up in the oven, making for quick and easy cleaning.

Lastly, to make your life easier the inner cabinet of the steam combination oven is made from stainless steel with a special linen-weave structure and PerfectClean finish, making it easier to clean and less sensitive to scratching than other ovens.

Sugar Syrup

220g caster sugar
500ml water

Dehydrated Pear

1 William or Packham pear

Puddings

200g pitted dates, halved
250ml water
½ tsp bi-carb soda
60g butter, room temperature
160g brown sugar
2 eggs
200g self raising flour
1 William or Packham pear, peeled

Tonka Bean Caramel Sauce

300ml cream
200g brown sugar
250g butter
1 tonka beans, roughly chopped

METHOD
Sugar Syrup
  1. Place sugar and water in a saucepan on medium heat, Induction setting 6-7.
  2. Bring to the boil slowly, stirring to dissolve the sugar.
  3. Boil for 2 minutes, remove from the heat and set aside to cool.
Dehydrated Pear

1. Slice the unpeeled pear very thinly using a mandolin, approximately 2mm thick.
2. Wrap cling wrap over a Baking tray twice, this will allow air to flow beneath the pears for a crisper result. Dip each pear slice into the sugar syrup and lay flat onto the plastic wrap, leaving a small space between each slice.
3. Place the Baking tray on a rack in a Gourmet Warming Drawer on Food Setting 5 (approximately 85°C) or in an Oven on Drying
function at 90°C. Set timer for 6 hours. Check the pears for crispness, if firm, they are ready, otherwise continue to dry for another hour.
4. Leave pear slices in the Oven until completely cool to touch. Store in an airtight container.

Puddings

1. Grease and line the bases of a 12 cup muffin tin, or a 2 litre capacity rectangular baking dish. Pre-heat Oven at 160°C with 1 manual burst of steam.
2. Place the dates and water into a saucepan on medium heat, Induction setting 6-7 and bring to the boil. Remove from heat and add bi-carb soda, stirring well to combine. Set aside to cool at room temperature.
3. Cut the pear in half lengthways and remove the core with a melon baller. Place the pear in a Perforated steam tray and Steam
at 100°C for 4 minutes. The pear should be cooked but have a little resistance to it’s flesh. Set aside in the Refrigerator to cool completely and dice.
4. Cream the butter and sugar together in a large bowl of an electric mixer until thick and creamy.
5. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing thoroughly between each addition.
6. Add flour and combine.
7. Whisk the date mixture into a smooth paste and add to the mixture.
8. Add the diced pear and gently fold through.
9. Spoon mixture evenly into the preferred tins/dish and place into Oven on shelf position 2 and release the burst of steam immediately.
Bake for 20-25 minutes for individual serves or 50-55 minutes for a large pudding until firm to touch and deep golden brown.

Tonka Bean Caramel Sauce

1. Place all the ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat, Induction setting 5-6 until melted, whisk well to combine. Reduce heat to low, Induction setting 4 and continue to cook for a further 15-20 minutes.
2. Cool the sauce for 5 minutes before straining caramel through a sieve over a heat-proof bowl. Discard the tonka bean.
3. Pierce the tops of the warm puddings with a skewer and spoon over a tablespoon of the caramel sauce. Return the puddings to the Oven and continue to Bake for a further 5 minutes.
4. Serve with extra caramel sauce, clotted cream and or ice cream.

HINTS & TIPS
  • If pears are very hard, they may need a few extra minutes of steaming.
  • Tonka beans have a bitter almond flavour and are a great alternative to vanilla or cinnamon. They can be purchased from specialty delicatessens and gourmet food stores.

THE ULTIMATE MULTI-TASKER IN OUR HOME – THE TV

If you aren’t already taking full advantage of what your modern big screen TV  can do, we’ll show you exactly what is now possible.

Long gone are the days when TVs took up valuable real estate in our living rooms for the pure task of passive entertainment viewing. There was a time when TV cabinets were designed with doors to hide them away when not in use, whilst some home designers suggested keeping them out of lounge rooms entirely.

TVs are more than just a device to watch the midday movie or the nightly news on. Just like many things in our life these days, it has learnt to multi-task.

Here are some of the ways you can take advantage of the technology built-in to new big screen TVs.

VIEW MORE THAN JUST FREE-TO-AIR BROADCASTING

Samsung art work Q7 QLED 4K UHD TV

TVs are getting thinner and more streamlined every year. When wall mounted, a big screen TV complements your home in the same way a piece of art does.

But what about the unpleasant blank-screen issue that makes a TV stand-out for all the wrong reasons in your living space when not in use? TVs now offer the ability to do away with the blank-screen issue by offering the capability to display stunning photographs, content or digital works of art on the screen when not being used.

The remote control has seen its own evolution over the years. Starting with the humble days of actually getting up off the couch to change the channel, to a wired remote, wireless remote, and now voice recognition.

Whilst voice recognition can be utilised by external devices like the Google Home to navigate TV, film and music streaming services through your TV, it is much easier when the software is built-in.

6 game-changing things you need to know about LG’s CordZero Handstick Vacuum Cleaners

No, not all vacuums are the same! Here are six things that make LG’s CordZero Handstick Vacuum Cleaners the latest must-have home appliance.

How great can a vacuum really be? Most of us detest plugging one in and relentlessly rolling a vacuum head over and over and over a stubborn cluster of crumbs.

It can be one of the most time-consuming chores because there’s the transition from rugs to tiles, and carpet to floorboards. Then there’s the hard to reach places like the corners of the staircase or the inside of the car. Ugh. The struggle is all too real.

That’s if you have the wrong vacuum.

LG has now released an incredible gamer changer on the home appliance scene with their range of CordZero Handstick Vacuum Cleaners. As the name suggests, these vacuums are completely cordless – meaning you have complete freedom from tangled cords and can clean up mess in any space conveniently!

Pretty impressive at first glance, right? The CordZero range has so much more to offer than the obvious cordless freedom, so we’ve gathered six of our favourite features about the CordZero collection that will change the way you look at cleaning.

Busts the dust with 5 Step Filtration

Let’s start off with the technical features that CordZero has to offer. Don’t be overwhelmed because we’ll take you through step by step – to a total of five steps to be exact. This dreamy cleaning machine uses 5 Step Filtration immediately from the second you turn it on to moment a particle of dust lands in its bin.

This deconstructed image shows exactly what’s going on in this lightweight vacuum (i.e.… a lot!). For a simplified explanation, dust and larger dirt particles are separated in steps 1–3 and deposited in the dustbin, while smaller particles including fine dust are filtered in steps 4–5.

These super vacuums have something called an Axial Turbo Cyclone™ design, which generates powerful mini whirlwinds of air that suck in and separate dust particles and dirt.

The built-in superfine spiral blades direct the airflow to help enhance dust separation. It’s ultra-powerful on large and small dirt particles. Check out how thoroughly it picks up sprinkles from a shaggy rug!

Improved performance with the lightweight Smart Inverter Motor® P9

The motor of any machine is arguably the most important part. LG uses a brushless Smart Inverter Motor™ in CordZero that spins at a rapid speed. It drives the fan to generate internal cyclonic airflows inside the vacuum to help separate and filter dust particles, as we mentioned in point 1.

The key feature to note is that the LG CordZero vacuum is designed with a brushless motor, which means it works with minimal mechanical friction during operation. Motors with carbon brushes may create carbon dust which wears over time when the motor is operating. Since the Smart Inverter Motor™ doesn’t use any carbon brushes, it generates minimal carbon dust.

By magnetic separation of the components (yes, we’re putting science caps on), the motor is more durable and will have a longer life. Such a long life, in fact, that LG offers a 10-year parts warranty on the motor!

The physical design of the motor itself is powerful yet small and lightweight, which allows the new and improved design compared to LG’s previous handstick vacuum cleaner.

Strong and thorough cleaning with the Power Drive Nozzle

The cleaning head also has a secret gem hidden within: the Power Drive Nozzle.

This special motor on the inside of the head rotates the roller so it can effectively clean from any floor surface. It lifts dust, dirt and even pet hair from carpets and off hard floors. Watch the short clip below to see it in action!

More battery time with the Dual Power Pack

With 2X models (A9 MASTER 2X, A9 MULTI 2X and A9 PETNBED 2X), interchangeable and rechargeable batteries are easy to swap over for continuous cleaning.

The two lithium-ion batteries in the LG CordZero handstick provide a possible total of a huge 80 minutes’ worth of vacuum time! (When operating in ‘normal’ start mode and without a Power Drive Nozzle™.)

By simply pushing the buttons on both sides of the battery, you can slip the battery in or out. What better way to speed up time spent on chores!

Comfortable operation with Thumb Touch Control®

Now that you know how it works on the inside, you’re probably wondering if all that technology makes the vacuum heavy or difficult to use. The short answer is: no.

CordZero is as cleverly designed on the outside as it is on the inside. These vacuums have an ergonomic Opti-balanced Handle™. This special handle reduces strain on your arm and wrist for relaxed and comfortable use – even when vacuuming the whole house!

The cleaner body of the CordZero is also specifically designed to face the floor at a 45 degree angle. Why? So that the centre of gravity of the motor and the battery are optimised to reduce muscle strain. Unlike other vacuums, it provides for an effortless position when cleaning the floor.

Perhaps the most noticeable comfort feature is Thumb Touch Control®. All the functions (on, off and power levels including turbo mode) are easy to control and are enabled with a touch of a thumb. LG has put all the control in the palm of your hand – literally!

Did we mention it’s also adjustable? There’s so much to love!

Easy, versatile storage

So you know what’s going on inside the CordZero, you’ve cleaned up the mess on the floor, and now you’re ready to kick your feet up. Packing away is just as easy with three storage options: Floor-standing mode, Wall-mount mode, or Compact mode.

The versatility in storage lets the CordZero fit into any space of your home, just the way you want.

They’ve produced award-winning robotic vacuums and continue to create innovative devices to help keep homes neat and tidy (without all the manual hard work!).

It’s almost too good to be true, but you can really kick your feet up and spend your free time on the couch while a little robotic vacuum quietly roams your floors and cleans them! If this sounds appealing to you (why wouldn’t it?!) then you’ll be glad to know that iRobot has three new models on the carpet market for you to get your hands on.

Speaking of which, in celebration of the Chinese New Year, iRobot and Bing Lee have teamed up to give three lucky people the chance to win one of the three new models! All you need to do is complete the entry form before 18/02/18: http://binglee.shopirobot.com.au/

We’re here to tell you all about the three new game-changing iRobot models: iRobot Roomba 637, iRobot Roomba 890 and iRobot Braava 380t. You can thank us when your chore day turns into catching up on your favourite shows instead! 😉

iRobot Roomba 637

If tech-savviness isn’t your forte then the Roomba 637 is the robotic vacuum for you. It’s the standard-setting bot that is perfect for a thorough, everyday clean. With one press of a button (no programming required!) the Roomba gets to work with its patented 3-stage cleaning process.

Balancing the use of vacuum suction and debris extraction, it removes dirt, hair and dust from your carpets, tile, hardwood, and laminate flooring. Even the smallest dust particles are captured thanks to the AeroVac™ Filter.

You might be wondering how a vacuum can navigate itself around your home. Well, it’s smart. Very smart! The Roomba has an iAdapt Responsive Navigation system which uses a full suite of sensors enable the bot to work its way under furniture and around the tight spaces of your room. It’s even clever enough (thanks to cliff-detection sensors) to avoid stairs or ledges that would cause it to fall off.

When it has finished its round of cleaning, it automatically returns to its Home Base® to recharge. Too easy!

iRobot Roomba 890

If you’re up for something even smarter, the Roomba 890 is sure to impress you. It has all the impressive features of the Roomba 637 with even greater performance thanks to its AeroForce® 3-Stage Cleaning System.

It also has Tangle-free Dual Multi-Surface Brushes with an innovative design that’s durable enough to grab pet hair and large debris from the floor while reducing hair tangles and brush maintenance. Tick for even more convenience!

Its Edge-Sweeping Brush collects dust from along wall edges and corners too. In fact, the AeroForce® High-Efficiency Filter captures 99% of allergens, pollen, and particles and traps particles as small as 10 microns. How’s that for a healthy home environment?

Now, probably one of the most awesome features of the Roomba 890 is that you can control it from the palm of your hands! That’s right, the Roomba 890 is aboard the app train. Simply download the iRobot HOME App and you’ll be able to unlock a whole world full of features such as:

  • Scheduling your cleaning from anywhere at any time.
  • App-based support for easy access to tips and tricks
  • Status monitoring to let you keep track of your Roomba’s cleaning
  • Pre-set cleaning to automatically clean up to seven times a week
  • Getting notified when your Roomba’s bin is full and needs emptying

iRobot Braava 380t

Now this one is a little different because this handy robot is not a vacuum. It’s actually a mop! You can finally toss aside your bucket and the impractical handheld mop for a device that will sweep up to 92m2 or mop up to 32m2 in a single cleaning cycle.

Like its Roomba relatives, the Braava won’t fall off stairs or ledges, and its smart iAdapt® 2.0 with Navigation Cube helps it keep track of where it’s been and where it needs to go.

It’s so simple and easy to set up. Just attach a cleaning cloth, press MOP or Sweep, and Braava will do the rest! It’s compatible with a variety of cloths and pads such as reusable microfiber cloths and disposable cleaning cloths.

The mopping robot is versatile and works on all hard surface floors, including laminate, hardwood, vinyl and tile. It has a triple-pass mopping action to clean up everyday dirt and grime, and sweeps back and forth in straight lines to trap dust, hair and dirt.

So how does it perform? On a single charge it can mop for up to 150 minutes or sweep for up to a whopping 210 minutes!

How to wall mount a TV (properly!)

After the excitement of purchasing a brand new HD, 4K, OLED or QLED TV, the best thing is bringing it home. For the best cinema-like feel in the living room, most people are ditching the entertainment unit or stand of the TV and opting to hang the screen on the wall.

Once mounted, the viewing experience is completely transformed! You’ll get an unobstructed view, a minimalist look and, best of all, comfort from the perfect eye level!

However, it’s not uncommon to take a little while to get to that stage – first is the process of actually hanging the TV. You want to make sure that you’re not drilling unnecessary holes into your wall and that you’re setting up all the wiring properly.

Most importantly, wall mounting a TV needs to be done with all the essential precautions for the safety of yourself and your family. The TV needs to sit securely on the wall, ensuring nothing is loose or unstable.

Here’s how to wall mount a TV properly.

Finding the right wall mount

Not just any wall mount will be suitable for your TV. Wall mounts differ depending on what brand, how heavy and what size your TV is.

Always read the packaging to ensure that your TV lies within the minimum and maximum TV size and weight range of the wall mount.

Another thing to take note of is whether you want the mount to tilt, swivel or hang the TV snug against the wall. The best way to decide is to visualise your living room and where you’ll be watching from.

If your couch is much lower than the hanging point of your TV, you may choose a tilting mount. If you have a wide living room, you may opt for a swivelling mount.

If you have a Samsung QLED TV, don’t forget that Samsung has created a No Gap Wall Mount for seamless hanging.

Measuring and fixing

Because you will be drilling holes into your wall, you’ll want to be certain of instalment the first time around. Here is the basic how-to, along with some helpful tips!

  • Read the instructions/manual twice before proceeding. It will prevent you from missing an important piece of information before it’s too late.
  • Also before proceeding, make sure you have the necessary tools and equipment, as well as any screws or fixtures that may not already be included in your wall mount pack.
  • Check that you have the required amount of powerpoints within reach and that all ports will be accessible.
  • Set aside the necessary amount of time (and a little extra) to complete the task – you don’t want it to be a rushed job!
  • Some steps might be a two-person job, especially if you have a large TV, so have a friend lend a helping hand.
  • Double check all measurements before drilling into the wall and mark with a pencil.
  • Always level after measuring so that you don’t end up with a TV that slopes to one side. These clever wall mounts have a level built into them to make your job easier!

If you’re ever in doubt, head down to your nearest Bing Lee Store. Our friendly staff are happy to give you advice on which wall mount is right for you and how to get your TV hanging in no time!

5 gadgets you need for the ultimate beach trip

What’s summer without trips to the beach? Slap on your sunscreen and embrace holiday vibes with these five gadgets.

With some of the most iconic beaches in the world, we Aussies are lucky to have such beautiful holiday-type destinations right at our doorstep. The sunshine, water and company of loved ones reminds us of what summer is all about!

We’re here to tell you that the summer experience can be made even better by packing a few extra items in your bag. Five items, to be exact. These gadgets are for the whole family to enjoy and (most importantly) can withstand the sand, water and travel.

So make space beside the board shorts and boat hats for the gizmos that’ll give you the ultimate beach trip!

1.     Waterproof portable speaker

Every year there’s that summer anthem that we all want on repeat. There are the tunes that bring beach volleyball games to life. And let’s not forget the tracks that bring out the dance moves.

A portable speaker is the life of the party. They’re small and light in design so you won’t feel like you’re carrying a boombox on your shoulder (although there’s nothing wrong with that if you’re old school!).

Opting for a Bluetooth speaker means that you can play your beach playlist from your phone and have it in the background without needing to reach for it after every track.

Even better is a waterproof portable speaker, which is quite self-explanatory. They’re durable and not afraid of a little accidental splash.

Ultimate Ears have an extensive range of waterproof speakers that are light, colourful, and produce quality sound to get the party going this summer. Check out the video below to see the UE Roll 2 in action!

2.     Waterproof camera

Summer goes by too fast, but one way to keep the memories alive is by capturing every moment on camera. Investing in a waterproof camera means that you won’t have to rely on your phone or regular camera, nor risk the damage if either gets wet (summer bummer!).

Save your phone battery and opt for a gadget that’s sole purpose is for seizing your summer adventures!  Capture candid moments underwater with the kids or sharp images of colourful fish in motion.

Your waterproof camera will be full of those incredible photos that you’ll hang up around the house!

For a durable camera that’ll give you quality images under the water and above it, you can’t go past a GoPro! Hit play on the video below to see all the incredible features of the GoPro HERO5 Black.

3.     Drone

Now that you’ve got a waterproof camera to take pictures below the water, a drone is what’ll get you amazing images from above it. Way above it.

A drone is a virtual flying camera. And you are the pilot! Drones let you film, photograph and navigate around areas with an incredible range of motion. They are unbelievably innovative and can come with a variety of features.

Ranging from pro drones to mini drones, there’s a design for the beginner and the tech-savvy. You can even create your own little videos (or short films!) with the powerful lenses and propulsion that offer steady flight and recording.

DJI and Parrot are popular for their ranges of drones that are light-weight, smart and eay to control. Get a glimpse of the DJI Spark Mini Drone experience by clicking on the video below!

4.     Portable BBQ

Snags on the barbie? Yes, please! The surfs and swims will undoubtedly get tummies rumbling, and a portable BBQ is the perfect hunger tamer.

Get sausages and chicken skewers cooking, onions caramelising and bread grilling with a lightweight, easy-to-use BBQ. Portable grills are typically a cinch to clean and pack away when lunch is over. And they’re super convenient to start up again when the sun goes down!

Everdure by Heston Blumenthal is a range of revolutionary barbeques with modern aesthetics and clever technology, designed by the 3-Michelin Star chef himself. Among the range is the CUBE – a portable BBQ that’s convenient and simply perfect for those summer picnics! Watch the clip below to get a better look.

5.     Portable charger

Time flies when you’re having fun. So too can the battery in your gadget! Prepare for an entire day and night out by making sure your phone, camera, tablet and every other gizmo has a source of life revival.

Packing a portable charger can prove to be very handy. They’re typically small in size and are a ‘just-in-case’ item that’ll give you peace of mind. Especially if you’re relying on your phone’s navigator to find your way home!

Laser and Cygnett offer plenty of trusty powerbanks to choose from whether you’re after one USB port or more. Opt for one with colour (like the Laser powerbanks featured below) to find it quickly in your beach bag!
